Learn more about the Burton Taylor story...

The romance between studio darling Elizabeth Taylor and revered Welsh stage actor Richard Burton is as intriguing as the plots they acted out together on screen. Spanning 13 years, 11 films, one yacht, millions of pounds worth of diamonds, two marriages and two divorces, the Taylor-Burton partnership is one of the defining celebrity unions of the 20th century.

The couple were officially introduced on the set of Cleopatra in Rome in 1962. Both married at the time, their union — dubbed “le scandale” — made headlines around the world, with even the Vatican chiming in on the matter. Though the costly film was not well-received by critics, the lure of seeing the Taylor-Burton chemistry on screen assured its box office success.

Taylor, then 32, and Burton, 38, married for the first time on 15 March 1964 in Montreal, Canada. They divorced a decade later in 1974, only to exchange vows a second time in Botswana a year later, then separated for the final time in 1975.

The couple’s time together was distinguished by passion and excess – they were lavish spenders who indulged in diamonds and dinners, bought jet planes on a whim, argued explosively, and made up the same way.
